you are not entitled to my work

Description

okay im trying not to be super negative for the few days left in december but holy MOLY i need to get this off my chest.

this is aimed at the MMD community but you could apply it for pretty much anyone i guess

i hate people who say modelers are selfish for not distributing their work.

i hate that "i support permanent distribution" stamp and the asshole who made it. (and anyone who uses it! fuck you!)

i hate anyone who thinks a modeler's work is worthless unless they have access to it. (example: image.prntscr.com/image/4xStG0… )

i hate anyone who thinks a modeler taking their work down because of broken rules is "overreacting".

for one, people who remove their work because their rules are broken? that's common fucking sense.
i'm sure you've been through this scenario in school before. a teacher introduces something new and fun. a bunch of assholes misbehave and make it not fun anymore. the teacher stops doing it.

someone makes something new. people misuse it. they break it or otherwise hurt themselves while misusing it. that thing gets taken away.

this is a common fucking fact of life; if you can't properly use what's been given to you, you don't get to have it.

if you misuse and mistreat someone's work, they will take it away. whining about an "overreaction" is you acting like a spoiled fucking child.

creators have the right to remove their content if it gets misused. don't scream and whine about it. you had your chance to use the content properly, and you abused that trust that was placed in you. the creator has every right to take that chance away from you.

in most cases, too, it's a form of a creator protecting themselves and their work. if someone misuses their work and they just allow it to continue, then what? their rules get broken even further, the situation becomes worse, the creator ends up not being able to control the situation.
in some countries (this is information ive researched over the years so feel free to correct me POLITELY if i'm wrong), fanwork is under a very strict watch. the creator is expected to pull the plug if anything comes up, such as misuse or the original copyright holders contacting them and telling them to shut it down. this is another reason creators may keep a tight leash on their work and how you use it.
or maybe they just worked really hard on it and they want to make sure nobody ruins that hard work. that's entirely valid. it's THEIR work, NOT YOURS, so you don't get to dictate their reasons or whine about them. if you hate it so much, go make your own shit.

another thing i can't fucking stand is when people do distribute things, and throw other people under the bus while doing so.

for example:
image.prntscr.com/image/FyFZcf…
(its exactly who you think it is, even tho i censored out their name and icon for anonymity)

it just. absolutely fucking infuriates me. a simple "thanks" or something like "i felt like distributing so i did! enjoy!" or something like that could have worked.

but no.

shitheads like you always need to feel like you're on top. you always need to feel like you're better than everyone else. you don't give a shit about other peoples feelings, you just throw them under the bus to make yourself feel better.

guess what? if you do this, you are utter trash. you're a piece of shit. you're absolute scum and i want you to stay far the fuck away from me.

you're not better than anyone for distributing your garbage. you're not a saint for uploading your dumb shit to mediafire and posting it for everyone else to get at.

if you want to distribute your work? fine! that's cool! good for you! power to you!
if you have to insult others in the process? fuck you! i hope a pigeon shits in your open mouth.

you don't need to turn your stupid download page into a shitfest where you insult everyone who chooses not to distribute. fuck you. fuck you!

and you know another thing that's shitty? claiming a modeler is selfish for not distributing.

maybe the modeler made that item or model for themselves.
maybe they distributed at one point, but aren't anymore, for various reasons (needs updating, rules broken, just dont like it anymore, etc which are all VALID REASONS)
maybe they just like to make stuff for fun, not for distribution.
maybe they aren't confident enough in other skills (textures/rigging/sliders/etc) to distribute just yet.

it doesn't matter the reason. a creator is entirely allowed to decide what they do with their own work, that's THEIR decision to make. who gives a shit if they're not distributing? maybe you'll be disappointed for a bit, but i absolutely promise you'll have forgotten all about it by the next week, if you haven't already found an alternative (note that i said ALTERNATIVE, not BETTER. i'm looking at you, assholes who go out of their way to compare creators' work to other creators and say one is better than the other. fuck you guys too!)
there is absolutely no excuse for antagonizing or harrassing someone for not handing everything you want to you on a silver platter. again, if you're so pissed off about it, go make your own shit. learn to model on your own. make it yourself. don't bitch and whine because someone doesn't feel like giving you something they worked hard on.

you have no reason or excuse to scream and throw a tantrum because someone didn't give you their work. don't be a pissbaby. go outside. smell a flower. pet a dog. buy a frozen pizza. get a hobby. there are so many things you could be doing instead of being a complete embarrassment.

personally? i really do love distributing my work. i like seeing what other people make with it. i like the feeling of being able to provide something that someone needed to finish their ideas. i love getting feedback on my work, i like being told what i did well and what i should improve on.
i love all of that.
but when people go out of their way to be shitty, it ruins that for me.
i've asked people to credit me for my work before and been told i was a stupid bitch. i've been told to go die because i wanted recognition for the hard work i did. i've been called all kinds of nasty slurs for asking someone to please abide by my rules.
and that ruins everything.
for someone who already feels like a failure constantly, for someone who already hates everything about myself, being screamed at because i wanted someone to credit me for something i felt like i did do well on is heartbreaking.

sometimes i don't distribute my work at all because of this kind of thing. and people still ask me for downloads to my work. STILL. i've had someone literally call me evil for not giving them something. all i said was "no". that's it. that's all i said. and i got paragraphs of berating and insults in response. all of that in response to one word.

i shouldn't have to be afraid to tell someone "no". that shouldn't happen. i should not be afraid to say no to someone. i should not have to point out big bolded letters that say "no" in my descriptions. i should not have to tell people to learn how to fucking read over and over and over again. i shouldn't have to do that.

i also shouldn't have to be afraid of what happens when i do give you what you want. i shouldn't have to constantly fear people breaking my rules. i shouldnt have to fear telling people not to break my rules. i shouldnt have to have a conversation with myself that boils down to "is distributing this really going to be worth the emotional labor i might have to endure as a result?"

if any of you think i'm overreacting to this, fuck you.

me and tons of other people have had to deal with this absolute bullshit for YEARS. i keep records of every time something shitty happens as a result of something completely harmless, like telling someone no or asking someone not to break your rules.

it's gotten so bad that now i'm in the habit of taking screenshots anytime i do one of the above. because 90% of the time, it results in the other person ignoring me, hiding my comments, and/or insulting me. me. the person whose work THEY USED.

that's a terrifying habit to have. and it's developed because of how many times a simple question or a single word has resulted in being berated and insulted.

it should not be this way.

stop being a bitch to people who aren't distributing. stop being a bitch who people who stopped distributing. stop being a bitch to content creators.

you are not entitled to our hard work.

i'm keeping comments open for now, but if yall decide to be shitty i'll disable them.

EDIT: also check this one out lol image.prntscr.com/image/I035pg… im not even gonna bother censoring the username on this. if you act like this when you're told no, fuck you.

Hi, I've read the whole post and I should say that your arguments are pretty solid. I've got nothing to refute. Just a few remarks that I would like to share. First, please let's stop the insulting vicious circle. When you fight back someone by insulting them, you've already been caught into their game. Please, don't let that happen. I'm referring specially to this line: "i hate that "i support permanent distribution" stamp and the asshole who made it. (and anyone who uses it! fuck you!)" (Emphasis added by me). Of course I understand that you needed to take this out of your chest. But that doesn't means it's correct to say it like that.

Regarding the reasons to not distribute a model:

"maybe the modeler made that item or model for themselves."
Then I should ask: Is there any need to show off the model at all? I mean, if it's a private model, why to show it publicly? You can use it just for your private images and videos. There is no need to upload them publicly, you can just show them to your friends and people who you trust. Right? There's also the option to share it via a private community. By showing those images you may make other people feel jealous because they can't have your model.

"maybe they distributed at one point, but aren't anymore, for various reasons (needs updating, rules broken, just dont like it anymore, etc which are all VALID REASONS)"
I shall accept the "rules broken" as a valid reason to stop distribution. However, I'm not so sure about the other two. Is it really necessary to stop distribution while working on an update? When a new version of web is being deployed, sometimes it's necessary to put the server in maintenance mode while the update is being installed. That's a technical requirement that is needed sometimes. However, an MMD model or part isn't a web application. There isn't any technical requirement to stop the distribution. The old version can be up and available until the new one is released, and even beyond that if desired.

"maybe they just like to make stuff for fun, not for distribution."
This is similar to the first one. Why the need to show it off?

"maybe they aren't confident enough in other skills (textures/rigging/sliders/etc) to distribute just yet."
While it's understandable to don't release an unfinished product. Sometimes it's interesting to do it in order to get feedback from the users. In game development there's the term "open beta". Which refers to an earlier version of the game which is not finished just yet, but it's released to the public to let the users know the game and report back any errors or suggestions. I an utopic MMD Community, the same workflow could be possible. Sadly, this ain't gonna happen any time soon.
